Hi! I’m so glad you’re here.
How it started
My interest in physical therapy began long before I ever set foot in PT school. My grandfather lost his leg as a child, and I grew up watching him walk with a heavy, old-style prosthesis. Even then, I found myself wondering how I could help him move more freely and comfortably.
I was also a lifelong mover - sports and dance were a big part of my childhood - and I experienced my share of sprains, strains, and fractures. In college and graduate school, I fell in love with anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics. Seeing how the body heals, compensates, and gets “stuck” in patterns convinced me that physical therapy was exactly where I was meant to be - walking alongside patients to help them move forward again.
After several years working in orthopedics, I was drawn toward women’s health and pelvic physical therapy. Moving through my own life stages including pregnancies, births, postpartum recoveries, and now menopause - this has all fueled my desire to learn and encourage others. I have personally experienced many of the conditions I treat. Back in 2005, I started a pelvic health program at a local hospital here in Athens, and since then I’ve had the privilege of treating thousands of patients with pelvic, pelvic floor, abdominal, hip, and spine conditions.
Why pelvic health matters
Pelvic health (and dysfunction) is often overlooked, yet it connects to so many parts of life - how we move, use our voice, eliminate waste, birth children, and connect intimately with others, just to name a few. I am honored to assist women on their health journey, offering a welcoming space where these concerns can be talked about openly and treated with skill and compassion. Whether your issues are simple or complex, fairly new or chronic, my goal is to listen first, complete an exam, then help you understand what’s going on and what we can do about it, step by step. There is hope and healing for you!
Personal life
I am a Christ-follower, wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend. I grew up all over the Southeast. I love time with family and friends as well as time alone. I enjoy being outdoors, exercising, dancing, listening to music, cooking, reading, and outdoor festivals - especially in the cool fall weather. My husband, Farris, is an Athens native, a University of Georgia alum, and he also works for UGA - so we cheer for the DAWGS! We have 4 children, 2 dogs, and 1 cat, and we have been actively involved in our local church and Athens community for over 20 years.

The start
My interest in physical therapy began after a serious car accident in 1999, when my sister sustained a spinal cord injury and completed rehab at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. Walking through that journey with her showed me both the challenges of recovery and the hope that comes with the right support. By my sophomore year of college, I knew I wanted to become a physical therapist and help others navigate their own healing process.
Why pelvic PT
Because of my own back and pelvic pain after the accident, I eventually found my way to pelvic health physical therapy as a patient. Experiencing firsthand how much relief was possible through manual therapy, exercise, and education sparked my passion for this specialty.
After graduating, I worked in outpatient orthopedics and began integrating pelvic health into my practice. I saw how closely pelvic health and orthopedics are connected and became especially interested in caring for women before, during, and after pregnancy so they could stay active and confident in their daily lives.
How I care for you
Many of my patients come to see me for:
Pain related to posture, movement, injury, pregnancy, or daily activities
Pregnancy and postpartum care, including preparation for delivery and support during recovery
Pelvic floor and core issues that affect comfort, function, or quality of life
I take a whole-body, whole-person approach to care. Together, we’ll look at the different factors that may be contributing to your symptoms - such as movement patterns, posture, muscle imbalances, and life stressors - and create a plan that fits your goals.
Dry needling is one of the tools I often use to address muscle, nerve, and connective tissue tension that can contribute to pain. My goal is for you to feel heard, supported, and empowered, not rushed or dismissed.
Personal life
I’m originally from Eastman, Georgia and a proud UGA alum. My husband, Daniel, and I have lived in the Athens area for over 10 years, and we have one daughter. We are active members of Green Acres Baptist Church. I enjoy being outdoors, going on walks with my family, serving in our church community, and spending time with friends and loved ones.

My path to physical therapy
Hello, I’m Marilee. I’ve always known I wanted to help people, and my path to physical therapy grew naturally from that desire.
I first earned my undergraduate degree in Psychology, but shortly after graduation, my grandmother had a stroke and moved to a skilled nursing facility for rehab. Watching her work with her therapy team and regain her ability to walk - at 92 years old - was incredibly powerful. It showed me how life-changing physical therapy can be.
I began volunteering and later working as a rehabilitation aide, seeing patients of all ages slowly regain strength, independence, and confidence. That experience convinced me that I was meant to become a physical therapist and help people take back control of their lives.
Why pelvic health
During PT school, I was reintroduced to pelvic health and completed an extensive clinical rotation focused on pelvic patients, along with additional coursework in this area. After graduation, I had the opportunity to treat pelvic health patients at UF Health (working with both women and men 18+) and later to care for college students at UGA.
Pelvic symptoms can be deeply personal and are often surrounded by embarrassment or silence. I believe women deserve clear information, compassionate care, and a safe place to talk about what they’re experiencing - at any age or life stage. My goal is for you to feel informed, respected, and in charge of your own healing journey.
What it’s like to work with me
I use a whole-body approach that considers your physical symptoms along with how they affect your emotional and social well-being. Together, we’ll build a plan that fits your life, not the other way around -one that helps reduce stigma, restore function, and build confidence in your body again. I value education, open conversation, and working as a team with you so you always know the “why” behind what we’re doing.
Life outside the clinic
Outside of work, I’m a daughter, sister, girlfriend, and friend who loves staying active and trying new things. I enjoy exercising, dancing (especially to Latin music), reading, spending time with loved ones, and exploring new hobbies - like Pilates and soap making. I recently moved from Florida and am still discovering the best hiking and outdoor spots here in Georgia.

Bachelor of Psychology, Florida Atlantic University, 2015
Doctor of Physical Therapy, University of St. Augustine of Health Sciences, 2022
Patient Care Coordinator
Kati Battaglia
Hi! I’m Kati, the patient care coordinator for Athens Pelvic PT, and I’m often the first person you’ll speak with when you reach out.
My job is to make getting started as simple and stress-free as possible - answering questions about our services, helping you feel comfortable with the process, and guiding you step-by-step as you schedule your first appointment.
How I support you
I know that reaching out for help, especially for something as personal as pelvic health, can feel vulnerable. When we connect on the phone, my priority is to listen - then I’ll help you find the right therapist for your needs, send over your intake forms, and to book your first few appointments.
My background is in real estate, where I spent over 15 years supporting people through big life decisions. That experience taught me how important it is to communicate clearly, be patient, and offer encouragement along the way - skills I now use every day to support our patients.
Outside the office
I’m a wife and mom to two active, fun girls, and I love being involved in their schools and activities. I enjoy traveling with my husband, being present with my family, and staying active in our church here in Athens. Originally from metro Atlanta, I settled in Athens over a decade ago and truly love this community and the meaningful connections I’ve made here.
